Correspondence Scholarship, Class Four [Tuesday Morning, July 1]

As the students filed in, The Academic arrived, wheeling a book cart. On one side, stacked high, were a number of small boxes. The purveyor’s whole name wasn’t legible, but from the classroom seats, the words “-Educational Picture Postcards and Assorted Souvenir Stationery” were boldly visible.” The other side of the cart had still more boxes, and something bottled and unforgettable gleamed inside. The Academic quickly folded those boxes closed, walked to a far side of the room, and closed them into a filing cabinet, before securing it with a rather nasty-looking correspondence lock.

“You’ll get that when you’re good and ready,” The Academic drawled, returning to the cart and lifting another box, “but the world’s finest pigments mean nothing at all without the proper…” and here they dropped the box thudding on the nearest bench: “paper!”

From the trim, tidy packaging, they produced a series of twee, doily-covered notebooks. Their pupil contracted at the garish sight, lips drawing back into a hiss. Suspiciously, they thumbed through the contents, relief diluting their disgust.

“Hm. Well. The paper is of the requested quality. That’s enough, I suppose.” The Academic passed a notebook to the nearest student, and gestured for that student to pass it down, in turn. Soon enough, each student was in possession of a notebook.

“Wretched and garish as they are, each of these are filled with fifty sheets of F.F. Gebrant’s Flame-Resilient Paper. These are professional-quality materials, and can safely accommodate three correspondence symbols at a time, as well as any English notes you might take alongside the symbols. The covers may be too precious by half, but you oughtn’t be. I can avail myself of a practically bottomless source, so use them up and ask for more as you require.”

“Let’s break them in with some fairly standard notes in English, shall we?” Chalk hit board, and the lecture began. "I want you to start thinking about what The Correspondence can do for you. Let us start with the two major skill sets: Crimson Engineer, and the Epistolant."

"The Crimson Engineer invents and develops technology. There are numerous subfields, any of which is well worth your consideration.”

“Aerosenautics is the application of Crimson Engineering to sustained flight. This is a very lucrative and currently developing field, due to increased interest in airships after the recent failed invasion by some misguided sects of Starved Men. The Khanate and the Iron Republic have made impressive strides and impressive craft, but I have personally overseen the work of genius minds here in London. You will not go hungry; and the miracle of flight is a rare privilege attainable by these slim few.”

“Locksmith. A simple name for the single most in-demand trade we’ll discuss today. Why do so many people want locks crafted in correspondence? It's such a specific usage! Well, the public has it in mind, and anyone with anything important to store- especially things that are hard, cold, and inflammable- love to have new safes. This occupation will net you plenty of jobs, both in the locking and unlocking of carefully-tuned safety mechanisms.”

“Our subject can also be applied to living organisms, through a surgical field known as Batbiorangilogical Studies. It is a more precise surgical field than Shapeling Arts, but it is also significantly more lethal when mishandled. Shapeling Arts involve the transmission and absorption of vital essences. Batbiorangilogical studies involve meticulous surgical comprehension.”

“Of course, there is room for generalists. But studying with colleagues is the best way to improve your skills, so it’s fine to pick a focus and change later.”

"On the other side, there are those who study The Correspondence with a strict linguistic focus.” Was that a wry smile? Could there be a hint of bias in this next bit? These are Epistolants. Rather than breaking the laws of physics directly, Epistolants avail themselves of the power of the written word as an art form. This makes use of the natural suggestive charms of both Correspondence and other tongues, meaning that there are no limits. All forms of communication can be utilized: written, spoken, sculpted, painted, auditory, textile, really, anything at all!”

“The dangers of this focus are more commonly mental and spiritual. Philosophical truths will reveal themselves to you. But more frequently, mistakes will cause useless information to burn itself into your mind, masquerading as items of vital importance. And a careless or wicked writer may do this, purposefully, to others.”

“Pure Epistolography is in letter-writing. Those who cannot read nor write will hire scribes to write for them. You'll frequently pick up work in simple english. But there will be nothing simple about your english. It will not be your duty to take simple, word-for-word dictation, but to communicate the feelings of the sender to the recipient.”

"Transchromators convey meaning from Correspondence to another language. In your cases, most likely English. You'll need to do a little of that, no matter which discipline you choose. However, as the name suggests, transchromators also must be capable of handling correspondence in its purest form: light and heat itself. Yes, this does require obtaining a license to handle otherwise illegal contraband, such as mirrorcatch boxes of sunlight."

“Poets/Composers. Based on the themes which have been popular in the past decade, I can confidently state that there is still a rich and thriving future in celestial and uplifting correspondence poetry. Something to bring light to weary and tired souls. Especially if you're musically inclined.”

“Legal work. You are not to break the laws, but to weave them. This will bring you into frequent contract- er, contact, with our infernal neighbors. If you like the challenge of technicality, there are no more suitable frontiers.”

"Now, I have neglected to mention it, but there is another option: You could, also, teach." Suddenly animated with false joy, they gestured, making no attempt at all to hide the bitterness chrining just below the surface. "If you've nothing at all better to do, why not waste your precious years of good health decomposing into a husk well before you'd ever considered shopping for your first set of tomb-bandages? What a lark! What joy!" The Academic seemed to come to their senses, remembering that they did in fact have a colleague here in class, who sometimes saw fit to wear bandages. They coughed awkwardly. “Well. I suppose there isn’t anything of itself wrong with teaching. If you’ve the choice to do it, that is.”

The thought lead into something much more soothing, and a new, satisfied expression taking its turn in the Academic’s eyes. “However, when I am at my regular occupation, then I am what is referred to as an "Emmistolant." In all avenues of life, it is not what you know, but who you know. And facilitating that communication is my trade. I need not hide myself behind my letters, nor remain cooped up in dry study. My travels take me to all corners of The Neath, discussing any number of strange matters with any type of person.”

“Every being is useful. They need only be introduced to the people who can make use of them, or to help their skills flourish. Misused as I am in this class, this administration has got one thing correct: For each of the professions I've described, I could see fit to write your chipper young careers a letter of introduction or referral.” The Academic paced the room. “But my recommendations hold more weight than the tonnage of a Standing-Stone at The Hurlers. I do not lift my pen without very good reason, and only the students whom I trust not to embarrass me on a grotesque and personal level will be ferried along to my lofty contacts. However, if you can manage some measure of esteem in this class, the one bright spot in this whole laughable summer would be in connecting those worthy with future careers as Correpondents."

A hint of pride. The Academic spoke honestly, genuinely hoping to write several letters by the end of the course.

“Now, if you’ve done your homework, you should be fresh and ready for this week’s tasks. If not, then you are going to have a very taxing morning, indeed. For the rest of today, you’ll be communicating with each other, using nothing but your current understanding of the correspondence, and the syllabary from the board.”

The Academic walked from one side of the boards to the other, pushing each up, revealing a large set of simple correspondence symbols. Unlike last week’s grid, this array did not trigger any immediate effects. The danger would likely come- as they’d been warned week one- in the night. As the Academic pushed the final board, they turned their heel in a very funny way, and gestured with their off hand. Their sleeve flowed behind the arm in a rather peculiar way. Almost like an additional limb.

“Proper Correspondence Symbols layer these in a way you aren’t quite ready for yet. So instead, you’re going to practice with a different format: Subject, verb, object. Using this simple “SVO” structure, find a partner and communicate in short sentences, no longer than three words long. You should be able to safely inscribe any number of these symbols on a single sheet without turning your notebooks to tinder, so have at it. See what you can learn with such a limited vocabulary. And only communicate this way. I don’t want to hear a single word of The Empress' English until the end of practice time.”

The Academic pointed over to a sitting-area they’d prepared. “That verbal luxury is reserved for each of you, one at a time. Come over when you’re ready, and discuss your classroom goals, and which focus might’ve caught your ear.”

“The rest of you, get to it!”

"Likewise!" The Piper held their hand out for a shake, relieved that they weren't supposed to remember who the newcomer was. "I'm the Piper. And the monster babysitting is a little more exciting than it sounds. Just let one of the Hyaenas in the Labyrinth eat some of my nightmares. Stings a bit, but pretty effective if you don't mind that." They shrugged.

They'd had other reasons to need to die briefly, so it all worked out. Had left them out of London for the better part of the weekend, though. They could've rambled about fighting assassins and playing chess and everything else they'd been up to, but they remembered it was probably polite to let the new guy introduce himself, even if it would probably take a few tries for the introduction to stick.

"Anyway, what about you?"

‘The Ftav-Collaed-‘ he begun, before remembering that generally people don’t introduce themselves while actively sipping anything. He moved the mug away from his face. ‘The Star-Collared Scientist.’ they continued. Today was pretty warm indoors, and so they took the chance to remove the signature shawl, revealing an inked neck just as covered with tiny tattooed stars, and yet more scars sliding even further under the shirt. ‘Self-explanatory’. He ignored the outstretched hand, opting instead to make his coffee swirl in the cup. ‘Hyenas are a pretty drastic measure, that’s for sure. So either you were desperate, or there was another reason, which, if you’d let me…’ They shot a sharp, slantwise smile at them ‘…sounds so much more interesting to hear about. Would you mind telling?’

"Ooooooh." Piper instinctively wanted to poke one of the tattooed stars, but stuck their hands back in their pockets before they could do so. They didn't have any tattoos - primarily for safety reasons, if one could believe it - but they did think tattoos looked very cool on other people. It at the very least always made them more memorable.

Then, after the Scientist asked his question -

"Well, if you insist!" The Piper beamed, thrilled as ever to be the center of attention. "There was an assassin I needed to fight, you see, but someone else got to them first. Didn't count. So, 'course, I had to follow 'er." They started to drop a few letters and syllables as they spoke faster. "Luckly, she's still in the boat. The boatman boat, y'know, that one. An'so I - well that part's secret." They winked.

(In reality, they hadn't killed the assassin. It had been too easy to mutually agree to not and say they did.)

(But it went unspoken that they would have, if that option had been the easier one.)

"Anyway, slept great after that. Part of it was probly the boatman 'imself. Right boring chess player. Really put the wrong type 'f bored in board games. D'you play?"

In the depth of the Scientist’s green eyes a dark hue swirled around like ink in the water, hinting that his definition of chess-playing might have been a little bit more personal than what the Piper asked. Their fingers rose to scratch a thin scar on the side of their neck, as if the memory itself caused it to itch. The inked stars swirled on the black skin. ‘You could say so, indeed. Chess in particular, like a battle, but a portable one. If you’d like a different opponent from our dear Boatie, you could always pass by my laboratory or place. If you’ll find me, of course’
He grinned, sharp again.
‘I prefer more physical kinds of fun, though. How do you like the urchins’s roof races at the Flit? Or shroom-hopping at the Hill?’

"Those are great, but if we're talking physical challenges, dueling's my personal favorite. I'd be happy to take you on at any of 'em, though." Piper grinned, excited at the prospect of competition. There were few feelings that compared to pitting themself against an opponent, no matter what the challenge was. Win or lose, the Piper was just happy to play the game.

The Scientist leaned forwards, now smiling. Not a grin, not a little curl of the lips, a straight up savage smile. A little scary, a little daring. ‘That is my favorite too.’ He pressed his fingertips to the scar crossing his eyes, tugging on the bits where it hung weird on the eyelids so to look at the Piper right. It did not make them look right. ‘I would love to see what you can do. You choose the arena. I like it when I get to improvise’
He let go of the scar, returning to the same, usual slantwise look, scanning the Piper like they were an aggressive monster to tame.

The Piper swallowed. Their heart quickened. Being appraised like that... they felt like the Scientist might dissect them right there.

Of course, that would only happen if they lost. And win or lose, they could tell just from the look in his eyes that the Scientist was an opponent who would give the fight his full attention. He didn't know the Piper. He wouldn't hold back because he assumed they were weak or foolish. ...At least, that was what Piper hoped. Victory over an opponent like that would be a high they could ride for weeks. And a loss? Well, then they'd have a better story to tell the boatman on their rematch.

Piper returned the Scientist's smile with the most devilish one they knew.

"Then I'll make sure to surprise you. I'll be in touch."

Unblinking, the Scientist now stretched out his hand to shake the Piper’s. The skin was crisscrossed by scars even across all the fingers. ‘Cannot wait. Just make sure to come back quick if you were to meet the boatman, wouldn’t want to lose you. I know I’d do the same’

At some point in a lull in the back and forth between Piper and Scientist Maven pipes back up again, "Piper, if you have trouble with nightmares again, you don't have to resort to that. I know a lot about nightmares, I can help you next time you need it."

She said it calmly, but internally she was freaking out a bit. She had not mentioned the method with the Hyaenas for a reasons, because of the potential dangers involved, and she didn't want to suggest such a thing and put one of her classmates at risk. The fact that they were studying the Correspondence was a risk in and of itself.

"Oh it's all good I did that on purpose," they said quickly, trying to reassure her. They still didn't know why she cared so much, but they found they didn't want to disappoint her, and didn't want her to worry any more than necessary.

Maybe changing the subject a little would be a better distraction though. She'd said something else interesting.

"You know lots about nightmares, though? What kind of stuff?"

Maven didn't want to judge, as she had made a very purposeful, very painful trip to the boatman in the past as well. (thanks Virginia) It didn't stop her from worrying all the same though.

When Piper brought the subject to nightmares though, she allowed the subject change, "Oh! Well-" she reached into her bag and pulled out the thick, well-worn notebook from last week, "In addition to everything I mentioned last week about how to keep nightmares under control and not let them affect your mental health too much, I've also been observing details about the dreams themselves." She began to flip through the book as she spoke, her voice growing more excited as she went on a mini infodump about nightmares, "I've noticed that there are many recurring shared dreams among a lot of the denizens of the Neath. Stuff about storms and thunder, water and zailing, chess games and battling royalty, death imagery with moths and stairs, the previous cities with fire and lava, and more! Not only that, but even in recurring dreams the choices you make in them can alter the outcome of the dreams and what you get out of them, abilities and benefits to be gain via those nightmares and dreams, and some can even impact your mental health in a similar way to all the solutions I listed last week!" At that she paused, thinking out loud, "Hm, maybe I should have included that in the talk I gave last week. There was just so much to cover..."

Re: Before Class

The Piper blinked. She'd explained strategies for combatting nightmares? Had Piper left before hearing them, or had they forgotten such important information so easily? Surely they would've taken notes, right? Or did they lose the notes somewhere, in their horribly disorganized satchel...?

Whatever the reason, they scooted closer and began copying from her notebook as she spoke. They'd have to be sure not to lose these.

"Recurring shared dreams..." They'd asked around about the Eater of Chains before, which often appeared in their nightmares, but hadn't realized any other nightmares could be shared. It made sense though, didn't it? If you could share a honey dream, why not a nightmare? Of course, they'd assumed the honey was the more important aspect in that connection, but--well, they'd assumed a lot, without putting in the kind of study that Maven clearly had.

(What was the point in studying? They wouldn't remember much, anyway. But maybe that could change, now.)

They weren't dumb enough to try writing any of the notes in Correspondence yet, even if they could feel the forms of some symbols in the back of their mind. Best to take things one step at a time, in this case. They could be patient. They could do this.

"Maybe, um, you could tell me more about what you know later, too?" They asked, almost sounding shy. Not quite like them.

It was just - hard not to feel dumb. All the time, really, but especially compared to someone who apparently knew so much, and - Piper felt a pang of longing. An echo of memory.

They'd used to be like that. They were near sure of it. If only they could remember why, or even how, they'd apparently thrown it all away. But the nightmares, a link to the subconscious, seemed like the closest thing they had to a lead.

Maven slowed down a little as she noticed Piper taking notes. She was happy that Piper was taking an interest in this. There weren't a lot of people who seemed as interested in the very unique way dreams seemed to work in the Neath.

Then Piper asked if they could talk more about it later.

If Maven was enthused before, she was absolutely delighted now. She looked like she was about to vibrate as she smiled wider than Piper had probably ever seen her smile, "I would love to do that sometime in the future! There's so much we could discuss!" She listed off even more things not mentioned before, like the unique dreams that could be induced from zailing, the interesting cases of the Eater of Chains (which Piper was familiar with) and of the Fidgety Writer (which was new to them)

As she spoke, her flipping of the notebook's pages had fallen on the nightmare prevention and management methods she had mentioned before.
